London Extravaganza
September 21, 2018
New term new theme – Cities! This week we tackled the big one – London. The focus for our visit was the diversity of its transport system (how do you move some 8 million people around everyday?) and the scale of its monumental architecture. In short we tried to experience as many forms of transport as possible and see as many of the capital’s largest building as possible – all in a day. Here are some of the ways we got around the city … And here are a few of the stops on our tour of the city. You can see our full itinerary here The highlight of our trip was the ascent of the Shard – London’s tallest building. Here is a little video showing the view from the 72nd floor. You can download more photos here …...

Beside the Sea
July 5, 2018
Well, this term we have been thinking about our ‘sea’ theme in many different ways but, sooner or later we had to splash out, take the plunge and get our feet wet so, to this end, PLACE families made the trip to the seaside town of Southend. Please have a look at a few moments from our trip …...

Making Waves
June 28, 2018
Alert readers will recall that this term’s theme is ‘the sea’! Here in land-locked Bedford accessing the sea can be a bit of a challenge – so what better way to try and create all the drama and excitement of the sea than through an arts workshop especially designed by our Arts Award co-ordinator, Paul Nicholson. The inspiration for the workshop was The Great Wave, a print by the nineteenth-century Japanese master, Hokusai. PLACE youngsters tried to follow in the footsteps of the master by copying and painting a giant version of the print. The images below show the process of tracing segments of the drawing from a projected image of the original and then coloring and assembling the final work. You can see more of the day’s work in our gallery below. Willow and the Sea
May 16, 2018
Our theme this term is ‘the sea’! So how does willow sculpture fit into this? Well, our PLACE youngsters took up the challenge and set about building the most dazzling array of sea creatures: dolphins, a hammer head shark, a penguin, a swordfish, a seal, (pause for breath), a sea bird, a starfish and a water spider (this really is a thing – look it up). All of these creatures were sculpted from ‘withies’ (flexible willow-branch cuttings of various dimensions) under the expert guidance of Charlie Lupton – and the results were stunning. Please have a look at our gallery (this and next page) to see the creatures being built and the final results. Arts Awards Success
May 10, 2018
We are delighted to announce that all 21 of PLACE’s summer 2018 Arts Award entrants were passed successfully with very positive comments by the visiting Trinity Art Awards moderator, Danusia Iwasko, when she visited our premises in Putnoe yesterday – she was extremely impressed with all of the entrants’ Arts Award project folders and described them as “excellent”. “Explore” youngsters were represented at the moderation by Mia Thomas and Charlie Robinson, Bronze by Ruth Fox and Nicole Nichols-Cook and Silver by Darryl Woolerson, all pictured above. With them are PLACE’s Art Award supervisor, Paul Nicholson, and Danusia Iwasko. The PLACE entrants answered Ms Iwasko’s questions about their folders and explained what they had liked about undertaking Arts Award projects and what they felt the benefits had been for PLACE participants. Paul Nicholson had worked very hard to display the folders and discussed PLACE youngsters’ entries in detail with the moderator. He would like to say a big ‘WELL DONE’ to all of the participants. He writes… ‘It’s been a real pleasure working with you and seeing the growth in confidence. I really enjoyed looking at all the folders when marking them and was very impressed with the range of artists and arts activities covered. Thanks also to all of the parents for their support over the last six months – it’s greatly appreciated!’...

Pop-Ups!
March 2, 2018
In line with this term’s theme of ‘children’s books’ we invited author Robert Crowther to come and visit us… Robert brought a new dimension to our work – we went 3D – we went pop-up! Robert is one of the leading creators of pop-up books and shared his knowledge and skills with us during two workshops – one for primary aged youngsters and one for secondary. Many thanks, Robert, for inspiring such a high level of engagement and creativity (and not just from our youngsters)… Have a look at our workshops in progress as, armed with scissors, pencils and glue we set about popping up. Nigel and the Dinosaurs
February 11, 2018
It’s always a special treat when our youngsters get to talk with a truly creative individual. This is exactly what happened when we were visited this week by the brilliant children’s author and illustrator, Nigel Blackman. Nigel is perhaps best known for his dinotek series of books and more recently for his new historical novel “Freedom for Bron” – it was these that formed the basis of his four workshops on creative writing and illustration for PLACE. Nigel’s visit was truly inspiring and it is reliably reported that several of our youngsters are now writing their own adventure stories – happy to publish them here when finished. Why not browse our gallery to see the group hard at work. Ely Cathedral
January 23, 2018
This week, PLACE families journeyed to Ely Cathedral to experience this beautiful building and to get some understanding of the Benedictine monastic way of life that has flourished at the Cathedral since the 7th century. During our visit, we were able to: try making our own stained glass creations (a famous feature of the Stained Glass Museum based at the Cathedral), learn how to create illuminated lettering, take part in storytelling sessions and, just for a few hours, find out what it really felt like to be a monk – sampling their dress, sleeping arrangements and food. ...

Building a Tudor House
December 16, 2017
This week, we were again visited by “Make Your Own History“. In the past, we have built stone age huts, an Egyptian pyramid and viking boats under their tutelage – but this time we were going for the big one – an entire Tudor House – in a day! So much of our modern environment is built out of steel, brick and concrete but, back in Tudor times, most houses were built using timber frames filled with “wattle and daub” – a low-tech approach with which our PLACE youngsters were able to get hands on. Here are the builders at work… The fun part was, of course, the daub – this was traditionally made from soil, straw, clay and animal dung. These days, of course, health and safety being what it is, we weren’t able to go with the dung but still managed to have a good daub. Here’s an example of the finished product....

Birmingham Thinktank

Our visit to Birmingham’s “Thinktank” Science Museum really was an action-packed day! During our stay, we flew through the vastness of space in the Planetarium, learnt about energy in a special “Energy Show”, controlled a robot and electrocuted a parent-teacher (only a little bit) … as well as having fun in the outdoor lab. An Audience with Elizabeth I
November 2, 2017
On a previous visit to Hatfield House, PLACE families met one of England’s most fearsome monarchs – Henry VIII. This week we were back at Hatfield to meet his daughter Elizabeth I (who also went in for a bit of head chopping and was quite fearsome in her own way). Here are a few more moments from our visit to Hatfield – look out for some of the wonderful costumes worn by our families. Art Awards & Art/Science Workshops
October 20, 2017
Yes – it’s back by popular demand – Trinity Art Awards, an opportunity for all ages to get creative and gain a nationally recognised certificate. “Art Awards” is managed by Trinity College London in association with the Arts Council England working with 10 regional Bridge organisations. [For Trinity College’s Art Awards website, click here.] Art Awards is a national qualification that inspires young people to develop their arts and leadership talents: it’s creative, valuable, accessible and unique. Art doesn’t just mean pictures on walls, it can be plays in a theatre, music in a concert or even poetry in a book! An Art Award (whatever its focus may be) can be achieved at five different levels, with four accredited qualifications, as well as an introductory award. Young people from the ages of 7-25 can take part to develop their understanding of the arts, to engage in arts practice and to encourage their creativity. As part of an Arts Award, they can visit arts events and share their views, research and work alongside artists and other creative professionals and share their own art skills via leadership. To get us started, this week we had a couple of introductory sessions led by Paul Nicholson, one of our long-time and highly successful Art Awards supervisors. Some 30 PLACE children and their parents came to our Putnoe centre to find out about the awards and to get some feedback and guidance about their new Art Awards project work. During the day, Paul also ran a number of art workshops with a science theme “Optical Illusions Through the Ages”. Participants looked at trompe d’oeil effects, lenticular prints, 3D images and a host of optical illusions, old and new, and rounded off their sessions by having a go at making a thaumatrope. Play in a Day

As part of our summer drama activities, a company called “Splats” came to work with those of our PLACE youngsters who have been engaging in our weekly Drama courses as well as other interested PLACE families. “Splats” offer “Play in a Day” workshops that allow learners to produce – from scratch – edited versions of great plays – in a day! For our participants this week, it was the beautiful “Midsummer Night’s Dream”… ‘On a Midsummer’s night, four young lovers find themselves wrapped in the dream-like arms of an enchanted forest where sprites lurk and fairies rule. While a feuding Fairy King and Queen are at war, their paths are crossed by Bottom, Quince and their friends presenting a play within a play. Chief mischief-maker Puck is on-hand to ensure that the course of true love is anything but smooth, and games of fantasy, love and dreams ensue in Shakespeare’s most beguiling comedy.’ Our Splats workshop was one of the best we have ever had for PLACE youngsters, and our sincere thanks must go first to the talented workshop leader, Johannes, who, through his energy and enthusiasm, inspired our youngsters to give of their best and stay focused all day. Thanks also to the stalwart PLACE parents who volunteered to stay and assist at the event and – finally – thanks to our youngsters, who gave us such a wonderful performance! Foundling Museum
February 11, 2016
This term, our theme is “Homes through the Ages”. Sadly, of course, down the ages, many children have been born into the world without a home of their own. With this thought in mind, we set off to London to visit the Foundling Hospital Museum and learn about a charity that has supported homeless children for nearly 300 years. At this fascinating and hands-on Museum, there are copies of the clothes the foundlings wore, the beds they slept on and, most poignantly, tiny “tokens” – buttons, thimbles, charms or even just scraps of fabric left on the doorstep with the infants – the only thing in the world linking them to the mother who made the heartbreaking decision to give them up. Also on display are eighteenth-century interiors preserved from the original hospital; a copy of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ and a collection of Handel memorabilia. The composer was involved in fundraising for the hospital during his lifetime – in 1750, he donated the chapel organ and, from that year onwards, the ‘Messiah’ was performed under his direction on an annual basis for the Hospital’s benefit. Our workshop leader for the day was artist David Lehan, seen below in the sumptous surroundings of the Museum. The museum houses a wonderful collection of portraits and, while they were there, PLACE youngsters were encouraged to draw self-portraits featuring objects that are important to them – much as the founder, Captain Coram, had been depicted by Hogarth all those years ago. The day was completed by a visit to the Museum of Childhood to take in the exhibition “On Their Own: Britain’s Child Migrants“, a sometimes heartbreaking look at how some children found homes in far off-lands away from their familites. Thanks to everyone at the Foundling Museum and the Museum of Childhood for such an enjoyable and thought-provoking day. ...

Kidzania (www.London.kidzania.com) already has many branches around the world: it offers youngsters early career guidance through very realistic role play, providing them with opportunities to operate in a huge variety of sets with carefully replicated and downsized equipment, detailed uniforms and even salaries (in Kidzania currency!) which they can spend later at the end of their shifts in the on-site store. During our recent visit, PLACE youngsters were able to experience first hand a huge range of potential careers, including … Forensic science Baby care Running a radio news room Smoothie making – not as easy as you might think… Have a look at our gallery below to see just how realistic the environments that Kidzania creates actually are… ...

Having left National Lavender, we made our way to Hunstanton and the Sea Life Sanctuary (starting to think about our ‘Water’ theme) – here the animals weren’t quite as cute and really not cuddly at all. Swiss Gardens
April 30, 2015
As part of PLACE youngsters’ learning around this term’s theme of “Flowers”, we visited the quaint, quirky and very charming Swiss Garden. Families were given a tour by the garden staff that focused on the Garden’s beautiful floral displays and on the work that goes into their preparation and maintenance all year round. Swiss Garden has been described as “the most complete surviving example of a Regency garden in Britain… an alpine wonder on the outskirts of Biggleswade”. Over recent years, the Garden has undergone an 18-month, £3.5 million restoration process funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund – there are 13 listed structures of delicate character on the site! Swiss Garden was created by eccentric Lord Ongley, who built the estate village of Old Warden on a similar alpine theme; apparently he expected his workers to sport rustic red neckerchiefs as he came by in his carriage! Apart from wonderful landscaping and magnificent and ever-changing floral displays, highlights of the Garden include the principal thatched building, the Swiss Cottage, a Grotto and Fernery, a tiny chapel, a thatched “Indian kiosk”, a punt dock – and several little islands accessible via small bridges and adorned with urns. Oh – and there are the most beautiful peacocks too fearlessly wandering around! ...

The Theatre of Widdershins
March 27, 2015
Andy and Penny Earey, who run the Widdershins Puppet Company, are ex-PLACE parents who had two home-educated youngsters registered with PLACE for many years. We have been fortunate enough to have had all sorts of input from Widdershins in the past, including fabulous workshops and showings of several of their highly entertaining puppet shows. Think not of “Punch and Judy” – Andy’s shows are full of drama, showmanship, true artistic innovation and wonderful, specially composed music. Andy makes all of his own props and puppets from beginning to completion; invents scripts and always includes some original musical compositions as part of his unique shows. Andy’s performances are truly engaging for all ages and never fail to delight and surprise – they are a highly entertaining and amusing experience for all, adults and children alike. Widdershins returns frequently to provide an outstanding theatrical experience for PLACE youngsters: on their latest visit, they took us into the magical world of – porridge! After the show we had our Bronze Arts award ceremony, at which Andy presented certificates to our successful candidates. ....

Visit to Ironbridge
September 17, 2014
To round off PLACE’s summer theme of “The Victorians”, we booked from 1st-5th September the whole of the Coalbrookdale Youth Hostel, which is located in the Ironbridge region of Shropshire. Built in 1853 as a literary and scientific institute by the Coalbrookdale Company, this beautiful Victorian building was used as a school of art before becoming a Youth Hostel in 1980. The building has been converted inside to provide thoroughly modern facilities perfect for youngsters (YHA Ironbridge Coalbrookdale has been awarded the Quality Badge by the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom). Set in the delightful Ironbridge Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Coalbrookdale Hostel provides an ideal base for exploration and learning. There is history every way you look – including ten museums in close proximity, most of which attended during our stay. We explored Victorian Britain in Blists Hill Victorian Town, where we were transported back to life in the late 1800’s, with townsfolk in period costume going about their daily lives, shopping and working. There is a Victorian bank on site – which exchanges modern coinage for Victorian legal tender to spend around the town, for example to pay for fair rides or to purchase freshly-baked cinnamon or currant buns at the on-site Victorian bakery. There is a chemist; grocer; tailor; photographer; squatter’s cottage; schoolhouse; steam-operated pithead; to name but a few. PLACE’s families had a chance to try their hand in the soap-making workshop as part of the day’s agenda; whilst at the China Museum, there was a clay workshop included in the itinerary. On another day, the group took a stroll to the 200-year-old Tar Tunnel. The structure that gives the area its name, the Iron Bridge itself, is a “must-see”. Particularly attractive for science and design students was the “Enginuity” Museum, which which allowed us to see how ideas become designs and eventually products, all in an interactive and engaging way. ...

PLACE Perform for Charter House
July 16, 2014
On a very hot and sunny afternoon, the children from PLACE excelled themselves in a war-time themed performance at Bedford Charter House. The residents were given rousing renditions of, amongst others, ‘Daisy Daisy’ and We’ll Meet Again’, which had everyone singing and clapping along. There were also singing performances from the little ones with songs about the zoo and driving a car, which had very energetic actions. The violins entertained us, as did Mariah, with her modern-day song, beautifully sung. The afternoon was rounded off with a short drama performance depicting the thoughts and feelings of an evacuee during the war. This was done through a poem written by one of the children. It was an excellent performance from everyone. The ladies and gentlemen said it was their best performance EVER! Following the performance one of the residents sent us this lovely poem. VISIT OF THE CHOIR By Mary Dyke To hear the children’s voices And join them as they sing To listen to their acting What happy thoughts they bring As they sing and act before us And violins are played They seem to give us all they’ve got In a happy serenade They take us back to wartime When children had to go from Their homes, and go to strangers To find shelter from the bomb We pray that today’s children From this and every race Will grow in peace, and never War’s traumas have to face So, many thanks to all of you Who entertained us here We all enjoyed your visit and hope You’ll come back another year. Finally, thanks to teachers Debs, Lucy and Hazel – and to Emma for help with the organisation....
